Fowey, Polruan and Bodinnick Cottages
The Fowey area is one of the most beautiful parts of the county; a tidal river flowing through the idyllic Cornish countryside, with little villages and hamlets dotted along the water’s edge.
The town of Fowey sits at the mouth of the river, sheltered from the sea by the headland on the opposite bank where the picturesque village of Polruan lies. Polruan is an ancient fishing village with a tiny harbour where the Fowey to Polruan passenger ferry docks. This little ferry connects the two sides of the river and provides a delightful way to enjoy the scenery of the estuary. Surrounded by water on three sides, Polruan is renowned as an unspoilt haven, a maze of narrow streets with a village shop and a couple of traditional pubs.
A little further upstream, the hamlet of Bodinnick nestles amongst the rolling hills that line the river. Bodinnick is also home to a ferry - the car ferry that links the two sides allows you to easily explore the whole region. One of the area’s most popular walks starts and ends in Bodinnick and there is a delightful inn, located just a stone’s throw from the water, where you can enjoy a well-earned drink after your walk! Right in the heart of Bodinnick you can find the home of the famous author Daphne du Maurier.
Just north of Bodinnick, past a bend in the river, is the little inlet of Mixtow-by-Fowey. Several modest sailboats and dinghies are moored here and it is the ideal spot for those with an interest in nature or birdwatching or who just like to while away the hours observing boats meandering downstream. This tiny hamlet is home to just a few houses and is the ultimate rural retreat.
Away from the river’s edge, there are many little hamlets scattered about the countryside, each with its own charm and character.
