Starting high in Bodmin Moor just a short way from The Jamaica Inn of Bolventor, famed for being the subject of Daphne du Maurier’s novel of the same name, the river Fowey winds its way to the south coast of Cornwall. At its mouth there are two settlements, one is the village of Polruan on the eastern bank, and on the west is a town that shares its name with the river, Fowey. Much of the surrounding area is owned by the National Trust, guaranteeing the beauty of the landscape.

Since before Roman times, sailors have been making berth here to trade the variety of goods that have come out of Cornwall over the years, as well as its imports too. Its heritage is clear throughout the architecture and narrow streets, in addition to some of the nearby landmarks such as St Catherine’s Castle that tell stories of Fowey’s past as a target for plunderers and invading navies.

Nowadays the bay is much more tranquil, the numerous yachts and pleasure craft gently sail through the calm waters, exploring creeks and corners inaccessible by foot, or soaking up the summer rays. The harbour is sheltered by Polruan, forming a gentle estuary suitable for sailing, swimming or even fishing as the shoals collect in the rivermouth. Polruan can be accessed by passenger ferry throughout the year, if you wished to get up closer to the distinctive buildings or want to explore the quieter side of the river Fowey.

For those less enthusiastic about spending time on water, there’s still plenty to do in and around Fowey. You can quite easily spend a day in the town’s shops, sample some of the great food and drinks served in one of the many pubs and restaurants, or head north to Bodmin Moor and the rest of Cornwall. A recommended journey is taking the South West Coast Path past St Catherine’s Castle and follow the coastline around the Menabilly estate, which served as inspiration for another of du Maurier’s novels, to the small village of Polkerris - a real hideaway with an open, sandy beach.
