Linder Sterling joins the Tate St Ives

A radical feminist, artist and significant figure in the punk movement, Linder Sterling, has become the first artist to join the Tate’s newest project: the Tate St Ives' Artists' Programme.

Linder, who works under her singular first name, is to reside in the studio of artist Ben Nicholson, the husband of Barbara Hepworth.

Summer visitors to St Ives cottages may have already seen examples of Linder’s work, with the artist having contributed a number of collages last summer to go alongside Hepworth’s sculptures in the Tate’s summer 2013 exhibition.

Linder said in this article that she was ‘captivated’ by St Ives and plans to extend her stay in the coastal town past the length of her artist’s residency.

Barbara Hepworth is said to have provided much of the inspiration for Linder’s work in St Ives, having been a prominent artistic figure in the area, as detailed in this Powells article; her influence continues to be on public display today, with many of the late artist’s works still present in the town.
