Porthtowan is a small village which lies about a mile from St Agnes. The name Porthtowan comes from the Cornish words 'porth' and 'tewynn' to mean 'Cove of Sand Dunes'. Porthtowan is famed for its wonderful beach. It's a surfers' and bodyboarders' paradise and at low tide has a vast expanse of sand ideal for building castles and playing games. During the summer season there are lifeguards on the beach all day and they mark out areas for swimming and for surfing with flags. This village is within walking distance along the National Trust coastal footpath to Chapel Porth, Trevaunance Cove and St Agnes.
