What’s On: October Half Term in Cornwall

October in Cornwall is sublime: the seas are warmer than ever thanks to months of summer sunshine, yet the beaches are void of crowds. Cloudless blue skies are met early by darker evenings, making nights in your luxurious home from home all the more inviting. The tempo is slowing down in the lead up to autumn, but there are still lots of excellent events the whole family can look forward to. Oh, and did we mention Halloween?
So where to get started? Whether you are here for a whirlwind short break or for the full week, October half term in Cornwall is full of the promise of freedom, play and adventure. Don your woollies, embrace the holiday vibes and get ready to make memories to last a lifetime.
October Half Term: 19th – 27th October 2019
If you have youngsters in tow, there are lots of ways to pass relaxed mornings and fun-filled afternoons this October. Should you have a mini Monet or petit Picasso amongst your gaggle, make your way towards the Tate St Ives. Hosting the excellent Tate Create ‘Tattoo You’ between 20th and 28th October, your little artists can set to work creating a life-size figure and tattooing it with gorgeous designs inspired by the gallery’s exhibitions.
Of course, we can’t forget Halloween looming around the corner. With a whole range of wicked events to get stuck into, sugar plum fairies, ghoulish ghosts and hornswoggling pirates alike are invited to have a fiendishly good time. A great one for all the family, Halloweden takes place between Saturday 19th October and Sunday 3rd November 2019; come face-to-face with mythical beasts (including Sapphire the dragon) and browse the medieval market place for goods.
Elsewhere over half term, Pendennis Castle is hosting a Creepy Critters spectacular along with a spooktacular Halloween quest around the castle, while DairyLand is inviting Halloweeners to join in with pumpkin carving and crafty workshops. For more defrightful events, the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth is putting on craft-making, storytelling and performances during Silhouettes and Shadows, and both Crealy Theme Park and Flambards are topping off their half term Halloween specials with superb firework extravaganzas.
October in Cornwall isn’t just about Halloween though, and if you are here a little earlier, there are plenty of other things going on to pique your interest. Pencil in Truro’s Oktoberfest on the 5th October, Falmouth Oyster Festival between the 10th and 13th October and North Cornwall Book Festival the same weekend. Lap up the atmosphere and fill your days with as much or as little as you please. Afterall, you’re on holiday.
