Spotlight on Looe this August

This August why not take advantage of the long sunny days and warm nights and enjoy some musical and family based entertainment in Looe? 

With the RNLI - Concert Whitsand Harmony and Songs of Praise at The Quayside Centre this Sunday 12th, along with a Family Fun Dog Show and a Summer Holiday Rockpool Ramble at Hannafore beach, there will be lots of opportunities for exploring! 

Every Sunday weather permitting why not take yourself off to the Lions Car boot Sale in two fields at West Wayland next to the camping and caravaning holiday camp. The location is rural with extensive sea views adding to the enjoyment of the occasion, so grab your loose change and grab a bargain!

On 13th August why not visit the Looe Arts & Crafts Society Summer Exhibition at Polperro Village Hall (also open daily until August 31st ), or venture to the Jolly Sailor pub in West Looe on the evening for a free Ukulele Jam Session at 7pm before watching Keltique at the Quayside West Looe at 7.30 (also performing on 20th, 26th and 27th August locally in Looe) 

From Tuesday 14th August there are open Mic nights at the Jolly Sailor in West Looe from 8pm (also 21st and 28th August) as well as Shanty Nights on August 16th, 23rd and 30th August, where you can sing along to the sounds of the sea with local fisherman and pirates alike! Polperro Fishermen's Choir Quay Concert takes place on 15th August at 7.30 at Polperro Fish Quay, with other appearances planned for 19th August at 7pm at the Riverside United Church, West Looe and 29th August again at Polperro Fish Quay at 7.30pm.

On Thursday 16th August there is a Nature Discovery Day at Hannafore, West Looe from 10am-5pm where you can join lots of volunteer groups for birdwatching, seal and shark information and a beach clean, and then relax with music at the Quayside with St Pinnock Brass Band at the Quayside Centre, West Looe from 7pm (also appearing locally on the 23rd August).

On Friday 17th August there is an RNLI concert at the Looe RNLI station from 7.30pm-9pm (also 21st August) and on Saturday 18th the Liskeard Ploughman’s Festival takes place is Liskeard from 10am-7pm.  Also that day you can enjoy the Sclerder Family Festival in the grounds of the beautiful Sclerder Abby nr Looe from 11am-8pm, or attend the Mind Body Spirit Charity Fair from 11am-5pm at the Millpool Centre, West Looe, followed by a relaxing Sunday stroll around the Craft Market, Quayside Centre, West Looe on Sunday 19th August from 11am-4pm, where you can purchase a variety of handcrafted items lovingly created by talented local artists and crafters.

More fun is promised for 23rd August with a Children’s Free Fun Day from 1pm-4pm at St Martin’s Church, Looe, and the world famous (well, almost!) Great Looe River Duck Race on Looe River from 12.30pm on Sunday 26th August, where 5,000 plastic ducks will be tipped over Looe Bridge and floated down the river. Ticket holders for the first 5 ducks to complete the course (as determined by the duck catchers in the river) will win cash prizes with proceeds in aid of good causes that the Looe Lions support.

To bring a very busy and hopefully sunny August to a close we have more music, with the Pelynt Male Voice Choir performing on 26th August from 7pm at the Riverside United Church, West Looe Quay, and an Open Mic Night on the 30th August at The Globe Inn, promising a free evening of music, dance, poetry and comedy from 8pm-11pm, with a real gig experience for all (under 18’s welcome with an adult)

Don’t forget that around these events you can still enjoy the 2 lovely beaches on East and West Looe, or for those of you with ‘sea legs’ there are always fishing and boat trips from Looe which allow you to either see the fish, or catch it and take it home with you, with mackerel and shark fishing trips always a popular choice! 

For those of you who just want to sit back and relax on the open waves, you can climb aboard a glass bottom boat or take one of the many boat trips around Looe island or to Polperro, or for those that want to still feel connected with the sea and its’ inhabitants, why to try your hand at a bit of crabbing from the harbour! The ladies in the Looe office know all of the best bait secrets if you want to pop by for some hints and tips on how you can fill your crab buckets quickly!

For anyone who fancies a great coastal walk with wonderful views along the rugged coastline and plenty of photo opportunities, you can venture from Looe to Polperro along the south west coast path enjoying a stop off at the picturesque Talland Bay along the way. 

If you prefer to take it easy and enjoy some tasty treats, Looe has a wonderful selection of cafes, restaurants, fish & chip shops, pubs and souvenir shops, so even if we get a spot of rain this August there will always be a welcoming doorway for you to shelter in, and something wonderful to tempt you inside!  We all hope that you have a wonderful Summer here in Looe and look forward to seeing you all next year!
