Our Favourite Free Days Out in Cornwall…

If you’re planning to visit Cornwall, but don’t want to blow your budget, you can! Here’s our favourite free days out chosen by a few of our team members… some things won’t even cost you a single penny!

For me some of my favourite free days are spent with my beautiful family at Crantock Beach where we paddleboard down the Gannel. My little boy is proving to be quite a natural on the board. After a long paddle it's time for a picnic or sometimes a bbq with a well-earned beer!

My absolute favourite free day out has to be a kayak down the Camel Estuary on a hot summers day.  You start in Wadebridge and the river changes as you near the mouth of the Estuary and what starts as a gentle river kayak, with plenty of birds and wildlife for company soon becomes a thrill seeking wave ride out towards Rock and Padstow!  We usually take a small picnic and land on Porthilly beach to soak up some sun before setting back off again.  You just can’t beat living in Cornwall on days like those!

Gwithian Towans are a world unto their own. Heading beachwards through the rolling, sand dune pathways lined with silver sea grasses presents the best kind of adventure: one that costs not a penny! With the peaceful, pasty-famous town of Hayle, and its adorable adjoining Phillack just 10 minutes away by foot, the Towans encase you in a Celtic micro-world. Cornish nature runs wild with unadulterated peace and expanse for as far as the eye can see, the distant harbour of St. Ives’ and its island poke out on the horizon to the South, just 7 miles away. The hushing waves of Gwithian’s renowned surf break provides the soundtrack for a leg-stretching of epic proportions, and the best part is that your four-legged companion is welcome all year round too.

My favourite free trip out is to visit the Flicka Donkey Sanctuary just outside Falmouth. It’s a very special place where over 100 donkeys, horses and ponies are cared for, all of whom have been rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment. Many of the beautiful donkeys who live here were rescued from certain death on the continent. It is a sanctuary and not a tourist attraction so don’t expect rides and play areas but if you want to experience a tranquil environment and the most donkeys that you will ever see in one place together then it is well worth a visit. It is a glorious sight to see them wondering free in the fields and rolling in the dust or lined up in the big barn munching hay. There is a great little café serving a small range of drinks, cakes and snacks and please leave a donation after your visit as they rely totally on fundraising to raise the huge sums needed each year to care for the donkeys and fund the vet bills as many of the animals need special treatment due to their difficult start in life.

My favourite free day out is a visit to Healeys Cyder Farm near Newquay. It’s perfect for any younger members of the party who will be able to meet one of their Shire horses, Shetland ponies, rabbits, pygmy goats, pigs and many other farm animals! You can even wander around the lovely farm shop onsite or 20 acre orchard. Of course, if you begin to feel thirsty or peckish then the restaurant is full of home-baked meals and cakes which are the perfect accompaniment with a chilled cyder in the Cornish sunshine.

A favourite free day by the sea,Has got to be crabbing in Looe for me!With a bucket, and net and some old bacon rind,I can’t wait to see how many crabs I can find!In friendly competition with all those around,We set up our area, marking our ground.We cast out our nets all stuffed full of bait,From the early hours until it gets late.Comparing our catch, and watching them munch,While we pause for a pasty, or ice cream for lunch!Collecting our clawed friends and smiling with glee,Before returning them happily back into the sea!A simple pleasure, not so exciting or wild,But one I’ve enjoyed since being a child.
