There’s always something happening Cornwall. From food and drink, music, literature, walking, arts and craft – anything and everything goes! Here’s our insider’s guide to our favourite summer events chosen by a few of our team members…

During June every year a fabulous event comes to Falmouth in the way of the International Sea Shanty Festival. This year there are 64 acts from all over the UK and abroad, performing in over 20 different venue across the town, all of which are free to enter and watch. The atmosphere is always congenial and often accompanied by good weather, this makes for a fun and entertaining festival. You will find singers on street corners, in pubs, on a professional stage in Events Square by the Maritime Museum, with each group performing in their own style. Food stalls and a large beer tent on the Square add to the atmosphere. This year’s event is being run from 22nd – 24th June so why not pay a visit and soak up the atmosphere of Falmouth’s maritime heritage.

With over 300 different events in Cornwall throughout the summer, picking my favourite is no easy task. As a food and gin (!) lover, I have already visited Porthleven food and music festival back in April, which sees over 30,000 visitors flock to this popular harbour town. Never one to say no to a good festival and of course the obligatory fancy dress, my diary is already booked up with events that include the Masked Ball in May, The Great Estate festival in June and Boardmasters in August! My favourite, however, would have to be the St Ives festival in September. This 2 week celebration of the arts is great for the whole family and includes events such as live music, art workshops, street entertainment, theatre, cinema and whole host of other exhibitions throughout the town.

For three days each year, the Royal Cornwall Show takes place in Wadebridge, and is one of the biggest events on the Cornish calendar with around 130,000 people attending. The event showcases Cornish produce with over 1,000 trade stands selling fantastic food and drink, local crafts and much more. Listen to live music, visit the famous flower tent, or even watch the entertainment taking place at the main ring; there’s also a major dog show and traditional steam fair. There’s definitely something for everyone! The show often gets a visit from a member of the royal family too.

One of my favourite social events of the Cornish calendar is the opening of the Fal River Festival in my home town of Falmouth. Starting at the end of May, this 10 day event is jam packed with over 150 events varying from music to gig racing to local foodie delights and so much more! This year I began the celebration of Falmouth River aboard the ‘official’ boat trip from Falmouth’s Prince of Wales Pier up river to the Trelissick House and Gardens jetty. Once alongside, out came the crates of freshly baked pasties and local Cornish ales to accompany our journey back down the river. It’s also where a barrel of ale boards the boat. The transportation of this barrel down the river back to Falmouth’s Event Square – marks the ceremonial start of the festival! Not been?
