Discovering new beaches 

Having been in Cornwall for a few years, you get to know your favourite spots and these quickly become your ‘go-to’ places. This weekend I ventured out of my comfort zone and discovered somewhere new – I was not disappointed and was blown away yet again by the stunning beaches that this county has on offer. Holywell Bay is a stunning expanse of dog friendly beach between Perranporth and Newquay.  

After parking up, I took the path to the right, towards West Pentire, up and over the dunes (not for the fainthearted)! I was spoilt with a beautiful sunny day and endless blue skies which made the walk all the more enjoyable. I couldn’t help but snap a few photos on route – the scenes were simply stunning, clear blue seas, blue skies with a splash of wispy clouds and white clean sands. The odd beach bather sprinkled the view. May is a great time of year in Cornwall; it’s warmer, it’s lighter for longer and there is a nice buzz of people without feeling over crowded. I love the coast path because no map is required and this section up towards Crantock (quite steep in parts) was no different. We followed the cliffs up top and then dipped down to Polly Joke beach (another new-bee for me!) for a little paddle before continuing to the Bowgie Inn for a refreshing beverage – sat people watching over Crantock Beach. 

This was a perfect Sunday afternoon activity. All in all, the walk there and back to Holywell was about 5-5.5 miles and with refreshment stations (aka pubs!) at either ends, I didn’t have to go too long without a Gin and Tonic!
