Our Favourite Beaches in Cornwall…

Cornwall’s beaches are rated among the best in the world. From surfing and swimming, sandcastles to beach bars, Cornwall has them all, and with such a glorious coastline, it can sometimes be hard to choose where to visit first! Here’s our favourite beaches chosen by a few of our team members…

Our Padstow Team Leader, Mary

My favourite beach is unquestionably Treyarnon Bay (pictured above). I was plonked on this beach as a baby, as soon as I was born. I have spent many a day here… it is my go to beach, whenever the sun comes out on my day off.

There is a beautiful natural swimming pool formed within the rocks that is uncovered at low tide. It is also dog friendly beach, therefore, it is perfect even on a stormy winters day, to walk my little dog Lady with friends, from Treyarnon Bay to Constantine Bay and beyond on the coastal path.

A short woodland walk from the village of Durgan on the south Cornish coast will get you to Grebe Beach, a little known spot on the banks of the Helford River. Its seclusion means that it can only be reached by a fairly steep footpath so there is rarely a crowd here. At times of the year, you can be the only person on the beach. 

Backed by woodlands and with rocks at either end of the beach, it’s a peaceful oasis of calm sailing waters and pretty scenery. A perfect for a stop-off point to enjoy a tasty picnic on a walk from Maenporth to Helford Passage.

Whenever my soul yearns for a meeting with the sea, I always head for Seaton Beach Café.  To me, the journey there along the seemingly endless Hessenford Road from Looe is the start of the magic! With its majestic moss covered trees and algae covered hanging canopies that make up the dense surrounding greenery, it’s hard to imagine that you are anywhere but following a magical road straight from a classic JRR Tolkien masterpiece! However, once the trees clear and the road widens you are faced with the vast expanse of gravel beach and gorgeous coastline on which sits Seaton Beach Café. Amidst the impressive coastline, this friendly location is an ideal resting spot for day dreaming and dog walking.  It boasts both indoor, covered (heated) and outside seating areas, catering for all Cornish weathers! And provides a vast selection of drinks, treats, meals and desserts on its’ varied menu. As Tolkien himself once wrote “Still round the corner there may wait, A new road or a secret gate”. I think I’ve found it!

For many people, choosing their favourite beach in Cornwall is a difficult task simply because we are spoilt for choice on a seemingly endless stretch of stunning coastline. For me, there is one beach that will always be my favourite for a whole variety of reasons. Gwithian towans, located near Hayle has it all – trust me on this one. With miles of white sandy beach backed by large sand dunes, Gwithian is a vibrant scene dotted with surfers, families, couples and of course our four legged friends. At over three miles long, the lifeguarded beach is seldom crowded and offers fantastic walks with St Ives and Godrevy Lighthouse as your backdrop. The waves here offer some of the best surf in Cornwall regardless of your ability, and the selection of beach cafes means that there is always a tasty treat or refreshing drink within sight so what are you waiting for?!

My favourite beach (so far as there are so many to see) is Sennen Cove, near Lands End. 

The first glimpse of the long, white sandy stretch of beach takes your breath away, the turquoise waves and ocean/sea as far as the eye can see. It is tranquil and filled with rock coves so you can tuck yourself away from everyone and enjoy the beauty of your surroundings. There are plenty of places to grab a pot of tea, cake, or more than a bite in the beach front café or further up there are dog friendly pubs, shops and small eateries.

My favourite beach is Tregirls as I have many happy memories of time spent there with family and friends. Playing beach games, chatting and watching the sunset.

My favourite beach is Constantine Bay, popular with families in the summer for that idyllic family holiday.  It’s great for kids young and old with its abundance of rock pools, golden sand perfect for building sandcastles, and is dog-friendly all year round.  

There is a little cafe where you can relax with a cup of coffee, and you can walk across the cliffs to Treyarnon Bay on one side, and Booby’s Bay on the other.

In winter you’ll see another side to this beach.  If you go there on a stormy day, you can see massive foam-topped waves breaking on the shore.  Surfers flock here whatever the weather, and it’s a wonderful place for a bracing winter walk.  Just make sure you wrap up warm!

With Rock Pools and Alcoves and Waves and Caves. Porthcothan has it all! The dramatic coastline that we have in North Cornwall leaves you with lasting memories of the sea, sun and sand and the great time you always had with your friends and family and your partner – holding their hand. That is why I like Porthcothan Bay as it sits firmly in my mind, of what a perfect beach should be.

Daymer Bay is my little bit of heaven.  A beautiful beach within the mouth of the Camel Estuary. Clear blue waters, soft yellow sand and gentle waves lapping at the shore…all your troubles melt away. For those who love an adrenaline rush – When the tide is right and the wind is up, Daymer Bay is a hot-spot for wind and kite surfers.

The beach also allows our four legged friends all year round.  I love walking the coastal path across to Rock or Polzeath. There is a lovely little Beach shop/Café hidden at the back of the car park.  They serve the best hot chocolates and ice cream. You will get lost in the bright colours and treasures hidden inside.

I love Maenporth cove near Falmouth because it has that ‘secret Cornwall’ feel about it. My favourite time of year is either the autumn or spring as it’s much quieter than in the peak of summer. Not the largest beach in Cornwall by any means or the most well-known but it’s perfect all year round. Maenporth is a small cove about 2 miles from Falmouth (the next beach on from Swanpool) and is a lovely walking distance from Falmouth on the south west coast path (although a bit steep in places!). 

You can hire out kayaks from the small café on the beach ‘Lifes a beach’ which also sell ice creams, coffees and soft drinks. A little rugged but that’s its charm. You can take off for the afternoon and explore the coast line from the sea but swimming is also a must in this cove. It’s also a great spot for setting up camp all day, with a picnic and enjoying a family day at the beach. Just behind the beach is the restaurant The Cove which serves lovely fresh tapas that you can enjoy whilst taking in the sea views. 

Sometimes in the morning, if you’re lucky, you can be the only one there and it feels like the most peaceful place in the world.
