The best places to eat in Cornwall…

Cornwall is known for its love of food, and with Mother’s Day fast approaching, we asked a few members of our team to tell us their favourite place to eat in Cornwall. Here’s what they told us…

Having lived in Falmouth now for over 11 years, I have enjoyed eating out at many lovely, local, independent restaurants in the town where the chefs use fantastic Cornish produce prepared with care and innovation but the one I particularly love to return to and always recommend to others is Oliver’s The Eatery.

Hosted by husband and wife team Ken & Wendy Symons, their style is based on modern British food served in a relaxed and intimate atmosphere. A real warm Cornish welcome awaits you from Wendy who manages front-of-house and who will talk you through the delights of Ken’s menu for the day. With an eye for detail, adventurous creativity and a passion for making the best of seasonal local produce, Ken dreams up delicious combinations of ingredients which will delight your palate.

The atmosphere is always warm and friendly, with an excellent choice of wines and aperitifs to complement your meal. Scrumptious food, first-class service with a smile and conversation will ensure you don’t forget your experience at Oliver’s. I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Carn Brea Castle is my favourite place to eat in Cornwall. The restaurant is all about the experience, and is certainly one of my favourite quirky places to dine. Built in 1379, the castle is perched at the top of Carn Brea hill and offers ‘rustic’ romantic dining by candlelight with sensational views; the perfect treat for a loved one. The Middle Eastern themed menu provides a modest but tasty selection of dishes, with a limited number of tables that allows for an exceptional personal service but that means booking is most certainly essential. What makes this restaurant so unique is that it's not online – there’s no website and no online reviews – its reputation is just known amongst locals and its success gained through word-of-mouth. But trust me – it’s cracking!

To be asked this question when you live in Cornwall is one that anyone would find really hard to answer. The county has so many amazing restaurants to choose from be them Michelin starred, locally owned, kid friendly, speciality the list goes on.  For me one of my all-time favourites has to be Gilmore’s in Newquay. Their fish tacos are to die for and washed down with one of their amazing cocktails is a pure treat.  Take a visit you won’t be disappointed.

Did you know you can breakfast at the Heron Inn, Malpas? What a weekend treat to leave the cooking and washing up to someone else! I especially love walking from Truro to Malpas – it’s just less than three miles – passed Boscowan Park and along the river towards Malpas. If you get thirsty, you can always stop en-route for a quick beverage at Boscowan Park café or Trennick Mill before setting off again.  The Heron Inn is in the picturesque village of Malpas and sits overlooking Truro and Tresillian River just where it meets with the river Fal. On a nice day, you can sit and look over the estuary taking in the views of nearby hills. It’s a very peaceful spot. 

The food is delicious and breakfast is served daily – all freshly homemade and local produce. I can recommend the poached eggs on toast and a cappuccino! You always receive a warm friendly welcome. If you’re feeling energetic, or need to walk off your breakfast, you can easily walk from Malpas along to St Clement along the coast path – alternatively, you can simply stay ensconced in the pub for a few more hours until it’s time for lunch!

My favourite place to eat in Cornwall is The Widemouth Bay Café and is found at Widemouth, overlooking the dramatic coastline. It offers a cosy atmosphere, excellent coffee and great food in a warm yet contemporary atmosphere. This dog friendly café is the perfect place to enjoy a sunny lunch overlooking the sea, or equally a hot chocolate with all the trimmings on a wet and wild day like we did last week. We sipped on expertly made Americanos and shared a salted caramel cookie whilst watched the roaring seas from the panoramic windows. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food is well priced and tasty.
