The 'Ruff Guide' - Dog Friendly Marazion

Marazion is a very dog-friendly town and a wonderful resort to visit with your four legged friend.

Marazion sits on the South West Coast Path and the ancient Pilgrims route of St Michaels Way, providing miles of wonderful coastal and moorland walking nearby. Marazion is also a perfect base for exploring West Cornwall and 'Poldark country', being only a few miles from Land’s End, St. Ives and the Lizard. All of our properties are within walking distance of Mount’s Bay and St Michael’s Mount where we are fortunate to have two long sandy beaches and one rock pool pebble beach which welcome dogs. All these beaches are tidal, so vary in size according to the state of the tide.

Marazion Town Beach - Seasonal Daytime Dog Restrictions - 8am to 7pm May until September

This must be one of the finest and safest sandy beaches in the country, dominated by the amazing view of the iconic castle of St Michael’s Mount. Marazion Town Beach can be accessed from the Godolphin steps or the slipway on the sea front car park, or anywhere along the promenade and play area (called the Folly Field). It continues from the Castle Causeway for 2 miles west to the village of Long Rock (that’s everything to your right when looking at the castle). There are sand dunes and a small river so it’s a great place for children as well as dogs to run and play. Midway between Marazion and Long Rock there’s the excellent Jordan’s Café (dog friendly) which does amazing cakes and coffees as well as a take away Sunday lunch to eat on the beach!

There is a seasonal daytime dog ban on Town Beach from 1st May to 30th September between 8am to 7pm, so during these months the town beach is still a great place for early risers or for an evening stroll with your dog.

You are allowed to walk across the Causeway to St Michaels Mount at low tide with your dog.

St Michaels Mount

You are welcome to walk across the causeway to visit St Michael’s Mount harbour, shops and cafes, but once on the island please make sure your dog is on its lead. Dogs are welcome in the garden of the Island Cafe and there is also outdoor sitting at the Sail Loft Restaurant. You cannot take your dog into the grounds of the Castle, however you can still experience the wonder of the island and its magnificent harbour setting.

Gwelva Beach - Dog Friendly all year

The stone and pebbly beach to the east of the Castle Causeway (that’s on your left when looking at the Castle), is known as ‘Gwelva Beach’.  It can also be accessed from the Godolphin steps or the ‘Gwelva’, which is the middle ferry landing accessed by the small footpath between Morva Gift Shop and The Rigging clothing store in the centre of Marazion. Dogs are permitted on Gwelva beach to the east (left) of the Causeway at any time of the year. Gwelva beach can also be accessed via Ley’s lane. Turn off Fore Street at the Copper Spoon Café (dog friendly) and walk down to the gates at the bottom of the lane then follow it around to your right to arrive at the ‘Top Tieb’ landing. This is a small harbour used by ferry boats at high tide. The beach to your right between the harbour to the Castle Causeway is dog friendly all year.

‘Steps Beach’ - Dog Friendly all year.

To the East of Marazion Top Tieb Harbour is a ¾ mile sandy dog friendly beach (pictured below) that can’t be seen from the road or car parks and is therefore a well-kept secret. Dogs are welcome on Steps Beach at any time of the year. It is much favoured by locals as it is always so quiet. The beach is also a delight for children with its gentle shelving sand and many rock pools to explore at low tide.

To access Steps Beach, turn off Fore Street at the Copper Spoon café (dog friendly) and walk down Leys Lane. Half way down there is a small alleyway on your left with steps leading onto the beach. There is no access to the beach for 1 hour either side of high tide from these steps.

 If you walk east along Steps Beach after around ¾ mile you can re-join the South West Coast footpath by ascending some iron steps. You can either follow the coast path to nearby Perranuthnoe and beyond, or follow the path back up to the road, coming out beside the cemetery at the top end of Marazion. There are stunning views of the Mount as you walk back down into the town, passing the Fire engine Pub and its tempting beer garden (dog friendly).
