Calling all star gazers!

Bodmin Moor is one of the most stunning places in Cornwall, its rugged beauty recognised and enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. 

And soon it may have yet another accolade bestowed upon it.  The whole moor is a designated Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with parts awarded Cornish Mining World Heritage Site and National Nature Reserve statuses, and now there are plans afoot to recognise the moor for its amazing star gazing credentials too!

Due to its rural and unspoilt environment and pristine landscape, the moor boasts some pretty spectacular star gazing opportunities.  Cornwall as a whole has low light pollution levels (often cited as one of the best places to view celestial events) but Bodmin Moor is the icing on the cake.

Edwina Hannaford, Cornwall Council’s Portfolio Holder for Planning, said: “Recent observatory data shows that the quality of the night sky over Bodmin Moor is amongst the best in the world.  Achieving recognition of this through an International Dark Sky Park designation would help protect the night sky from light pollution and bring other benefits, including providing a focus for awareness and learning about the stars and solar systems, a further draw for visitors to the area and a starrier sky for local residents.”

There are only three other International Dark Skies Parks in the UK and Bodmin Moor looks set to become the fourth.
