This weekend saw the grand reopening of the Penzance Jubilee Lido and Seawater Pool. Located less than 10 miles from beautiful St Ives, it is one of the lesser known, jewels in the crown of West Cornwall. The pool had been closed for nearly three years following massive storm damage in January and February 2014, (see picture below)
Due to the good work of the “Friends Of The Pool” and the local council, it has now been restored to its former glory. The historic pool was originally opened in 1935, in conjunction with the celebration of King George V’s Silver Jubilee. www.jubileepool.co.uk/the-pool/history
Situated on the Promenade, the pool is tidal, filled every day with cool salt water as the sea washes in. Which make it a perfect place to swim safely in fresh sea water. Make sure you bring your sunscreen as it is a suntrap, protected on all sides by high whitewashed walls, it has a distinctly Mediterranean feel.
The pool is only open for a short season every Summer, so it is easy to miss! Open 10.30am – 6pm every day from now to the 11th September, at only £4.75 per adult daily entrance fee, it makes a lovely summers day out. There is a café serving delicious food all day, which has far stretching views from Mousehole and Newlyn over to Penzance Harbour, Marazion and St Michaels Mount.
With plenty of activities and event scheduled for the summer, whether you are feeling athletic or just want a day off laying in the sun, the Penzance Lido has something to offer visitors of all ages!
