Well, the first hurdle is over, our application to take part in the annual Padstow to Rock swim in aid of Marie Curie Nurses was successful – no mean feat I can tell you as all places were apparently taken within 40 minutes. So, inspired by our efforts last year and determined to use our wetsuits again, this year we are entered as a corporate team so our swim times are added together to give a team total – it’s so exciting, we get to wear special green hats rather than red or yellow ones like everyone else!!!
So now I have something to focus on during my weekly, Friday night swims with Wadebridge Swimming Club, no more pootling up and down and in depth discussion about Rob Titchener’s treatment of poor Helen (The Archers for the uninitiated), it’s head down and legs and arms going like the clappers.
The pool was decidedly chilly on Friday, so I ignored coach Adrian’s instruction to warm up with 400m SKPS (Swim Kick Pull Swim) and stuck to front crawl. Suitably warmed up we progressed to the heart pumping middle section of the session, donned flippers for a few lengths of kicking drill and finished off with 4 lengths of sprints –at that point we realised that maybe Adrian’s day hadn’t gone as well as it might have, as he designated the final 25m sprint as a butterfly length – I did the length but can’t honestly say it was much of a sprint! All in all it was a pretty good session, 1700m achieved and managed a chat with friends as well (Rob’s mother is now a cause for concern!).
Note to self – start swimming in the sea earlier this year with the wet suit on.
