Cornwall and its attractions shortlisted at British Travel Awards

A seventh year as the UK’s favourite holiday destination is within touching distance for Cornwall after the county was once again shortlisted at the British Travel Awards.

The county is a huge hit with holidaymakers as thousands of visitors every year stay in St Ives cottages over the summer and other popular holiday destinations across the county. This has been recognised after the county was nominated for the Best UK Holiday destination award at this year’s British Travel Awards.

Cornwall has been the holder of this prestigious crown since 2009 after fighting off competition from the likes of neighbouring Devon and Northumberland.

A number of Cornish attractions shortlisted for awards

The National Maritime Museum in Cornwall has also been shortlisted for the UK Heritage Attraction of the Year award at the British Travel Awards.

The Falmouth-based attraction is a huge hit as the museum’s visitor numbers are already up on last year’s figure and the success has largely been put down to new exhibitions.

The increasing number of visitors is also set to increase further as the National Maritime Museum Cornwall has recently unveiled its latest exhibition. Viking Voyagers is a display that gives people an insight into Viking life and the opportunity to see rare antiques that are on loan from the British Museum, the National Museum of Ireland, the National Museum of Denmark and the Manx National Heritage museum.

Being shortlisted for the award is a huge honour for the National Maritime Museum Cornwall and this year the attraction will be pitted against other attractions such as Edinburgh Castle, Snowdon Mountain Railway, Stirling Castle and Giant’s Causeway.

Cath Horton, visitor services manager for the museum, told the Western Morning News, “Our team have worked so hard to grow and develop the Museum and this nomination confirms that years of focus are really paying off.”

The Eden Project has been shortlisted in the UK's Leisure Attraction of the Year category and Bude has been shortlisted for the Best UK Coastal resort.

Visitors and locals can vote for Cornwall and its attractions until September 30th and the winners will be announced at the British Travel Awards Gala Awards Dinner on 25th November.
