Culdrose Air Day taking to the Cornish skies

The Royal Navy’s finest flying machines will be ready for inspection at their airfield in Helston. The Culdrose Air Day is set to celebrate naval aviation on Thursday 30 July.

For one day each year, on Air Day, the naval air station opens its doors so the public can see how the unit operates. Visitors can experience the sights and sounds of the Fleet Air Arm, the Royal Navy’s aviation unit.

There will be flying displays, meet and greets with crew members, and the opportunity to get up close to the aircraft. Aerobatic display teams will excite the crowds with fast-flying jets and helicopters. Crews from all over Britain, and international teams as well, will take part in the air show. With the Cornish coast as a backdrop, the event is sure to be a special holiday memory.

Located on the southern tip of Cornwall, the air station is best known for its rescue service. It provides frontline helicopter support all over the world.  Also known as the HMS Seahawk, Culdrose is home to a variety of military aircraft including Merlin and Sea King helicopters, Hawk Jets, and the King Air 350 Avengers. It is one of Europe’s biggest helicopter bases. It offers support for anti-submarine warfare, as well as airborne surveillance and control services.

Culdrose is home to about 3,000 personnel – between pilots and support staff. The base operates 365 days a year, and is constantly on call for emergencies throughout the South West.
