“It’s stunning and we got the best summer ever!”
That was actor of the moment Aidan Turner speaking of St Ives earlier this year after filming the now cult BBC One TV programme Poldark.
Cornwall provided the main set for the popular new series where many of the actors were able to enjoy the fantastic landscape that sees so many come to the area on holiday. Since the first episode aired on BBC One on the 8th March, families around the country have been searching for Poldark cottages for their next break to experience their own piece of 18th Century Cornwall.
‘It felt like the South of France or Italy’
It is likely that our Cornish cottages will be snapped up quickly this year, ahead of season, with Turner saying of the private beach they filmed on at St Ives, “It felt like the South of France or Italy”. Speaking on the BBC Blog, Turner described filming on the location in Cornwall as “the best summer ever!” whilst reiterating the beauty of the area saying, “It’s stunning, it really, really is.”
From the “amazing, epic, terrifying cliffs everywhere” to the enormity of the sea making it feel like “the biggest set ever” it is clear that the west of Cornwall certainly left an impression on the brooding actor.
Since Poldark first aired, searches for Cornish tourism have spiked with Visit Cornwall experiencing a 65 percent boost in traffic, suggesting that Poldark’s cast and crew are not the only ones to recognise the stark beauty of the series’ filming locations.
Poldark is next on our screens this Sunday at 9pm on BBC One. To catch-up on the series and see the Cornish coastline at its best in this fiery drama, head to the BBC website for more information and past episodes.
