Paralympian finishes marathon-a-day quest in Cornwall

Paralympic Games gold medal winner Richard Whitehead completed his 40 marathon challenge in Land’s End on the afternoon of 23 September.

As Richard passed Cornwall cottages in picturesque villages, a huge number of supporters, both locals and holidaymakers, took to the streets of the county to cheer him on as he completed the momentous challenge of 40 marathons in 40 days.

Starting in John O’Groats on 13 August and finishing in Land’s End, his project is raising money for charities Saracoma UK and Scope. According to this article, he said of the challenge, ‘Despite the constant aches, pains and endless hills there was one thought that kept me going. That thought was a determination to prove that anyone and everyone can live a life without limits’.

Richard holds the world records for both the full and half marathon for athletes with double amputation and is the first Paralympian to successfully complete this extended marathon.
