Newquay Zoo celebrates birth of black wildebeest

The keepers at Newquay Zoo have had reason to celebrate over the passing days, following the birth of a rare female white tailed-Gnu – familiar to many as a black wildebeest.

The new arrival – who has been named Poppy- is currently being hand-reared around the clock to ensure that she stays in tip-top health. The birth is a result of the tireless breeding programme which the zoo first adopted back in 2008, being the first UK zoo in 20 years to house Black Wildebeest. Poppy is the fifth calf which has been produced thanks to the program, one which can only continue to improve to safeguard the future of the animal.
