Scenic railway journeys to Cornwall reached a record high last year, according to recent figures, topping more than two million passengers for the first time.

The seven community rail lines in Devon and Cornwall saw passenger journeys rise by 4.7% in 2012 compared to the previous 12 months, with the largest increase on journeys reported to be on the Atlantic Coast Line to Newquay, a reported 22.5% growth following the introduction of all-year round Sunday services.

More than 613,000 journeys were made on the Maritime Line between Truro and Falmouth, the largest actual number of journeys reported, marking a 147% increase since 2006.

The figures make pretty reading for tourism officials in the county, who have seen more and more holidaymakers flock to the region to enjoy a break in one of the excellent Cornwall cottages over the past few years.
