Polruan Cottages

Found at the mouth of the river Fowey, just across from the larger town of the same name, Polruan is the quintessential Cornish fishing town.

Book a self-catering holiday cottage in Polruan and enjoy one of the most charming parts of Cornwall. With superb harbour views of the busy Fowey estuary and a range of activities, from yachting to hiking, you can find yourself a fantastic getaway here.

A small fishing village with a rich history, if you’ve never been to Polruan before, you’ll be finding yourself enchanted by its charms and vistas. With the larger town of Fowey across the estuary, there are some beautiful views to be had - whether of the water speckled with yachts, or the homes climbing up from the water’s edge. The village is surrounded by water on three sides, the mouth of the River Fowey to the north and west, and the Atlantic to the south, this little spit of land is a great destination for those who love the sea air.

Thankfully, the village’s position means that the winds are rarely harsh, being sheltered from the strong gales coming off the Atlantic makes it a small haven for people and yachts alike.

For those with the less confident sea-legs, the South-West Coast Path runs east out of Polruan to Polperro along the craggy shores of Cornwall’s south coast. With bays and beaches, there is plenty of opportunity for picnics and lazy days on the sand. To the west, a short ferry trip across the Fowey, you’ll be able to join up with the South-West Coast Path again and head west to the Gribbin Tower which provides stunning views across the St Austell Bay. The passenger ferry runs regularly all year round and during the summer months keeps running until late, meaning that a night out in Fowey is very much an option. Unfortunately access isn’t ramped, so wheelchairs and buggies may have trouble. Not to worry though, Polruan has two very friendly pubs and a bustling local community that thrives independently from Fowey.

Polruan’s advantageous position provides the small village with a rich history. The ruins of an 8th century church are found at the top of Polruan, older than many other churches in the area, it is often thought to be a lookout point for monks who acted as a form of coastguard. A number of centuries later, and the estuary had became an important port for boat construction and fishing. In order to protect the quays of both Fowey and Polruan, blockhouses were constructed either side of the river’s opening. Polruan’s has been preserved so you can visit it today, with great views over the water and across to Fowey town.

So what’re you waiting for? Book up at one of our quality self-catering cottages today and discover a magnificent part of Cornwall!
